Empowered Women, Healthy Families takes a multi-pronged approach to support information gathering, education and recovery of Maya families from domestic violence that was made worse by COVID-19. CMPI’s approach works to address system, practice and community level interventions for managing complex issues that include legal, financial, health, emotional, and social factors. Interventions focus on the system level by advancing policies that include the values and principles of a System of Care to ensure that services are coordinated, integrated, community-based and driven by community voices.
Direct Services
Direct services for this project focus on the inclusion of Maya spirituality and traditional practices to support culturally relevant care. The program is modeled after successful indigenous peers, such as the Native Women’s Association of Canada Toolkit for Aboriginal Women Escaping Domestic Violence, which is being adapted for Maya women and girls in Omaha. Through this program we are also collaborating with One Fire Associates, a Cherokee woman-owned consultancy and GONA implementation experts and Morningstar Counseling, an American Indian Woman-Owned Business that has been providing behavioral health services across the State of Nebraska since 2012. They provide mental health services to indigenous children statewide through the Society of Care.

GONA Summer 2023
In the Summer of 2023, CMPI held two Gathering on Native Americans (GONA), one for Maya adults and one for Maya youth. The GONA framework is an evidence-based intervention to support community connectedness, mobilization and healing from historical and intergenerational trauma. These four-day workshops included discussion, ceremony, activities, and fellowship. CMPI will host another GONA for Maya Youth in 2024.
